Microsoft Teams

Which Teams links work, what the bot does on the way in, and why a tenant can stop it.

Minutd joins Teams meetings in the browser as a guest. It never signs in to a Microsoft account.

  • https://teams.live.com/meet/<id>?p=<passcode>
  • https://teams.live.com/l/meetup-join/...

Paste a link as it is. Keep the ?p= passcode on the short links, the meeting does not open without it.

What the bot does

  1. Opens the link and chooses Continue on this browser.
  2. Types the bot name, switches the microphone off, keeps the camera on only if you set a camera image (otherwise off), and presses Join now.
  3. Waits in the lobby until someone admits it. The wait is capped by the lobby timeout in Settings.
  4. Posts the join chat message, records audio and reads the participant list and the active speaker about four times a second.
  5. Leaves when the meeting ends, the bot is alone for the alone timeout, or the maximum length passes.

When the join fails

The reason shows on the meeting page.

Status messageMeaning
This tenant blocks anonymous guestsThe organiser’s tenant does not allow people without an account.
The organizer denied the request to joinSomeone in the lobby pressed Deny, or removed the bot.
Nobody admitted the bot before the lobby timeoutNobody let the bot in. Raise the timeout or admit it sooner.
The meeting has already endedThe link points to a meeting that is over.

Tenant policy

Anonymous join is a tenant setting, and the meeting organiser’s tenant decides, not yours. In the Teams admin centre, under Meetings, Meeting policies, the policy needs “Anonymous users can join a meeting” on. The organiser can also turn it off for one meeting in the meeting options. If it is off, Minutd cannot get in and does not try to work around it.

Other limits:

  • Meetings that require a verified or signed-in attendee are blocked the same way.
  • A lobby that admits only organisers or the organisation’s people needs a person to admit the bot by hand.
  • Teams changes its web app without notice. The page reading lives in one versioned module, packages/platforms/src/teams-selectors.ts. If joining or speakers break after a Teams update, open an issue with the date.
  • Tests run against fake Teams pages that are modelled on how Teams is built, not recordings of a live meeting. Treat Teams support as young and report what you see.
